The knowledge library

What do you need help with?

Choose a topic or search the library. Each guide includes a practical starting point and a source for further reading.

Reports

Read your credit reports

Start with the facts, one account at a time.

Read guide

Get your reports through AnnualCreditReport.com. Compare identity details, balances, account status and dates across the bureaus. Make a separate list of each specific error and the evidence supporting it. A report and a credit score are different products.

Read the official source ↗
Disputes

Correct an inaccurate account

A clear explanation is more useful than a blanket dispute.

Read guide

Identify the account, the exact field that is wrong, the correct information and why. Send supporting copies to the relevant bureau and information provider. Keep originals and delivery records. Only dispute information you reasonably believe is inaccurate or incomplete.

Read the official source ↗
Disputes

When an item comes back verified

Review the explanation and your evidence.

Read guide

Compare the investigation response with the issue you raised. If an error remains, explain what is still wrong and provide relevant additional evidence. A verified response is not automatically proof of a legal violation. For a CFPB complaint about inaccurate or incomplete CRA reporting, first dispute directly with the CRA and check the Bureau’s current complaint requirements: the dispute must no longer be pending or have been submitted more than 45 days ago. Seek qualified help about unresolved legal issues.

Collections

Understand a collection notice

Identify the collector before sharing information.

Read guide

Read the creditor name, amount and dispute instructions. Keep the envelope and notice. If you question the debt, review the response deadline printed on the validation notice and the official sample letters. Do not send payment or identity documents to an unverified caller.

Collections

Debt verification and validation

A collector request differs from a bureau dispute.

Read guide

A bureau dispute concerns reporting accuracy. A request to a debt collector seeks information about a collection claim. Use the process that fits the issue. Review the notice promptly because certain protections depend on a timely written response.

Old debts and lawsuit time limits

The court clock and reporting clock are different.

Read guide

Do not assume that an old account has disappeared or that a reporting date decides whether a lawsuit is allowed. Applicable law, debt type and payment history matter. In some states a payment or acknowledgment can affect the lawsuit deadline. Get state-specific legal advice before acting.

Read the official source ↗
Medical

Review a medical collection

Reconcile the bill before deciding your next step.

Read guide

Request an itemized bill and compare it with your insurer’s explanation of benefits. Ask the provider about billing mistakes, insurance adjustments and assistance options. If collection or reporting is inaccurate, identify the concrete error. A HIPAA reference is not a universal credit-deletion method.

Read the official source ↗
Medical

Medical debt rules can change

Check the current rule instead of relying on an old article.

Read guide

The CFPB’s January 2025 medical-debt reporting rule was vacated by a federal court on July 11, 2025. Do not assume a blanket federal ban applies. Review current bureau policies and applicable state protections for your situation.

Identity

Unknown accounts and identity theft

Use the identity-theft process only for actual theft.

Read guide

If an account truly resulted from identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan and report. Save the documents and contact the affected companies. An unfamiliar name may also be a lender’s reporting name; investigate before making a fraud claim.

Identity

Freezes and fraud alerts

Protect your file while you investigate.

Read guide

A security freeze restricts access to your credit file and is free. Request it separately at each major bureau. Review how to lift it before an application. A freeze and a fraud alert serve different purposes; use official instructions to choose what fits.

Auto

Repossession and deficiency balances

Ask for the records behind the remaining balance.

Read guide

After a vehicle sale, request the sale accounting and supporting notices. A remaining balance may still be owed, depending on the facts and law. Keep your contract and correspondence. A dispute letter alone does not erase a deficiency.

Read the official source ↗
Legal

Lawsuits, judgments and arbitration

Respond to the court on time.

Read guide

A letter to a collector does not replace a court filing. Read the summons and contact a licensed attorney promptly about deadlines, defenses and arbitration questions. Do not rely on a generic form to vacate a judgment or refuse an arbitration provision.

Choose credit help carefully

Understand the service before signing.

Read guide

You can dispute credit-report errors yourself for free. Avoid guaranteed deletions, guaranteed score increases or instructions to claim accurate accounts are fraudulent. Review any paid service’s written terms and your cancellation rights.

Opt-outs and privacy

Reduce unnecessary sharing and protect documents.

Read guide

Review privacy choices directly with the companies holding your information. Opting out of marketing does not itself correct a credit-report error. Use secure official channels for identity verification and send only the documents reasonably required.

Use this checklist while you work. Keep a secure copy of your documents and a separate calendar for real deadlines.

Use truthful, specific facts. Do not claim identity theft or dispute accurate information just to seek deletion.

Drafts are not saved to an account or sent automatically by this tool. Reloading clears them. Downloaded files may contain sensitive information. Do not enter a full Social Security number, full account number or detailed medical history here.

State laws & legal questions

Local rules need local answers.

The applicable law can depend on your location, contract and type of debt. Start with official state resources rather than treating a generic time-limit table as a legal conclusion.

Find your state’s resources

Use the official directories to select your state or territory and find consumer protection contacts, complaint options and your attorney general.

Before relying on a time limit

  • Identify the debt type, contract and relevant dates.
  • Ask which state’s law applies and whether a payment changes the timeline.
  • Separate lawsuit limits from credit-reporting limits.
  • For court papers, get advice about the actual response deadline.
Read CFPB guidance on older debts ↗
Common questions

Clear answers to common concerns.

Can every negative item be removed?

No. Accurate, current negative information cannot simply be erased by a credit repair company. Focus on correcting actual errors and building consistent financial habits. FTC guidance ↗

Is a collector validation request the same as a credit dispute?

They address different issues. A collection request concerns a collector’s debt claim; a bureau or furnisher dispute concerns reporting accuracy. The FDCPA generally does not cover an original creditor collecting its own debt. Read the collector’s validation notice and its response deadline before choosing a request. CFPB: collection-law coverage ↗

What if I have already been sued?

Read the summons immediately and seek legal help about how to respond. An ordinary dispute letter is not a court answer, and using this website does not pause any deadline.

Does this website send my letters or keep my case?

No. The workspace lets you edit and download a draft. You review and send it yourself through a verified channel. You can switch letter types and return to edits while this page stays loaded. Drafts and the checklist clear on reload; they are not a saved case file. Your browser, device and hosting provider may retain ordinary technical data.

Can I get a guaranteed score increase?

No result or timeline is guaranteed. Correcting errors and improving credit habits may help, but outcomes depend on your individual file and the scoring model used.

Where are the state statutes, tax and specialty guides?

Start with the state resources above for legal research. Questions involving bankruptcy, canceled-debt taxes, student loans, recording calls, judgments and contract arbitration need their own current official sources and qualified guidance. This site does not supply a universal form or state-by-state legal opinion for those issues.
